Yak
  • Yak - The Perfect Animal

    line
Yaks really are the perfect animal. You can eat them, use their wool, sell their hide, sell their skull / horns, they eat about a third of what a cow eats, calf easy, require no shelter, live around 25 years, require no grain (in fact they simply won't eat it), don't bawl like cattle (just grunt), and they won't tear up your land. Yaks are amazing, beautiful, and very entertaining to watch - like a herd of hairy dogs playfully running around. ;) We have a variety of Yaks available from our herd in Battle Ground, WA - from meat, to breeding stock, to starter herds. The price of Yaks vary depending on the type of animal purchased - a meat animal can be as low as $600 and a registered breeding stock animal up to $3,000, we have all types available. We are a small 20 acre family farm in Battle Ground, WA - email or call us at 360.601.7018. Yak Facts: Size: Adult Yak cows range in weight from 600 to 700 pounds and stand 4.5 feet at the shoulders, while Yak bulls range from 1200 to 1900 pounds and stand 5.5 feet at the shoulders. Full size is achieved in five to eight years. Lifespan: Yaks breed and calve far longer than cattle since Yaks live 20-25 years. Fencing: Yaks are very easy to fence, requiring no special consideration. They are content in a small area and mix well with other livestock. Existing cattle facilities are easily used. Any fence that holds in cattle will work just as well for Yaks. No permits are required to raise Yaks. Feed: They are very efficient food-converting animals and eat about one-third to one-half of what an average beef animal does. They are browsers and grazers and do well on a variety of pastures with no supplemental feed required. They don't require any finishers like grain, in fact they simply won't eat it. A mature Yak can do well on as little as 6-10 pounds of grass hay per day. Four 600 pound Yak cows eat less than one 1200 pound Angus cow. Meat: Yak meat is deep red in color with the fat located on the outside of the carcass where it is easily trimmed. Yaks are 95-97% lean and are very low in fat and cholesterol. The taste of Yak is best described as beef-like, but more delicate in flavor and it has a savory aroma when grilled. Yak is high in protein, with one-sixth the fat of beef. Pure Yak meat sells at a price equivalent to bison. Yaks have a very light footprint closer to that of a goat and won't tear up the land (one-quarter the mud created by the average beef animal) Yaks cross readily with cattle. The first and second-generation male crosses are sterile, but the females are highly fertile Yaks are easy to raise Yaks are income producing and provide certain tax advantages Yaks are disease resistant and cold hardy Yaks are compatible with most agricultural operations Yaks do not require special diets Yaks can be docile and are easily tamed when handled regularly Yaks are more efficient than cattle Yaks will thrive where cattle will starve Yaks can survive severe blizzard-like conditions, which would easily kill cattle. Newborn Yak babies can survive temperatures as low as 30 degrees below zero Yak cows can be tamed. They can make great pack animals. Yaks are more sure-footed than horses or mules Yak wool is highly useful. It can be used to make sweaters, blankets, coats, and hats. Yak wool is much warmer than sheep wool

VERTO is an eclectic organization to say the least, we specialize in many areas which are typically highly segregated. Our passion is to live life with our foundations firmed rooted in God’s Word, sharing this passion and love with others. Almost every time this means what we do and how we do it is quite counter to the culture we live in. Our primary focuses are on business consulting and self-sustainability.

On the business consulting side we have worked with many types of organizations, from corporations to non-profits, from business plans, HR policy, accounting, electrical and mechanical engineering, manufacturing, IT, websites to Biblical principles in business – we are excited about many areas of business.

On the self-sustainability side we currently have a 20 Acre farm in Battle Ground Washington where we raise yak, chickens, rabbits, and honey bees, along with our new venture in aquaponics. We believe that it is important to raise your own food, focus on family and live for Christ alone. We don’t subscribe to the modern day approach to “work”, we believe in hard work with family and community integration. Jeremiah 29:5 says “Build houses and settle down; plant gardens and eat what they produce.” Want to live free? Grow your own food, love your family, friends and neighbors and love your God.

Deuteronomy 30:8,9 …obey the voice of the LORD and keep all his commandments that I command you today. The LORD your God will make you abundantly prosperous in all the work of your hand, in the fruit of your womb and in the fruit of your cattle and in the fruit of your ground.
